Welfare and Health. Sociality, physical activity and healthy lifestyles, an experimental project for the elderly remaining in the city
The experimental project aimed at members over 65 of the socio-recreational centre Sempreverdi, in Municipality 9 in the Comasina area, which is the result of the collaboration between the Municipality of Milan – Welfare and Health Department and the Wellness Foundation, has come to an end.
The project was designed with the aim of promoting healthy lifestyles and fostering social occasions for those who could not get away from the city in July.
“Health promotion – comments Councillor for Welfare and Health Lamberto Bertolé, – is one of the great challenges we face if we want to make our social systems sustainable; this is why we are happy to have experimented, together with the Wellness Foundation, this pathway that has simultaneously seen physical activity, the dissemination of health culture on nutrition, pathologies and lifestyles, and the valorisation of the city’s redeveloped spaces such as the new squares. As an administration we are working hard on this and, in particular, on creating opportunities for the elderly that are accessible to all and which can also become opportunities to combat loneliness, which is a problem and source of malaise in our communities. Given the enthusiasm of the participants and the effectiveness of the action we will replicate and expand the project”.
The programme of “Wellness Tuesdays“, which took place in July with the involvement of trainers specialised in motor activities for the elderly, included a muscle activation walk in Piazza Gasparri, redeveloped by the municipality as part of the Open Squares project; a gentle gymnastics session with exercises to improve strength and balance; a healthy snack with fruit kebabs and fruit juices to encourage the consumption of healthy food; and ‘wellness pills’, i.e. conversations on the four pillars of healthy lifestyles: movement, nutrition, positive mental approach and sleep.
The participants, almost all women aged between 72 and 94, challenged the heat and followed the trainers with great enthusiasm and willingness to put themselves to the test.
The project is part of Milano Wellness City 2030, launched by the Wellness Foundation to spread a new culture oriented towards healthy lifestyles and prevention in the city of Milan.
Our hope is to replicate the initiative starting in the autumn, extending it to the city’s other municipalities, as a concrete action to promote wellness and an active lifestyle among Milan’s citizens, helping to realise the vision of Milan as a city of wellness.
Kudos to the participants, almost all women aged between 72 and 94, who braved the heat and followed the trainers with great enthusiasm and willingness to put themselves to the test!
