Exercise is Medicine – exercise is a powerful prescription

22 November 2023

Wellness Foundation presents the new edition of the practical guide to exercise prescription, aimed at the medical community

Today in Madrid, during the first “Exercise for Health Summit“, organised by EuropeActive and attended by the World Health Organisation which provided the opening speech, the Wellness Foundation – the non-profit organisation created by Nerio Alessandri, founder of Technogym – presented the new edition of “Exercise is Medicine, a quick guide to exercise prescription”.
Nowadays, an extensive amount of scientific evidence confirms the effectiveness of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and treatment of major chronic non-communicable diseases. Nevertheless, physical inactivity still remains one of the major public health problems worldwide.

The publication is aimed especially at the international medical community, with the purpose of promoting the prescription of exercise by doctors.

It is estimated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that if we do not immediately encourage more physical activity among the population, by 2030 nearly 500 million people will develop heart disease, obesity, diabetes, or other chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) attributable to physical inactivity, with a global cost of approximately USD 300 billion.

Beyond policies and concrete measures that can be defined at the institutional level, the world of health and exercise plays a key role.
The publication “Exercise is Medicine” is first and foremost intended to be a practical tool to support physicians in integrating the prescription of physical activity and exercise into daily practice; it is also intended to help exercise professionals in providing accurate and scientifically sound guidance. Fifteen years after the first version, the guide devotes a chapter to the healthy population and addresses the main non-communicable chronic diseases: hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, overweight and obesity, cancers, osteoporosis, depression; pathology by pathology, it summarises the scientific evidence and provides precise recommendations in terms of type of exercise, frequency, intensity and duration.
The new edition was released by the Wellness Foundation, with the support of Technogym, global partner of Exercise is Medicine – an initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine, and was supported by THiNKactive, EuropeActive‘s research center, and the Research Centre for Sport Sciences department of King Juan Carlos University.

Scientific supervision was provided by the Scientific Committee of the Wellness Foundation.
