Via Ferrata
The vie ferrate in the Dolomites were ‘born’ in the post-war period, largely retracing those rocky paths that were used by the military to reach a strategic outpost or the top of a mountain, taking advantage of the easier and less exposed passages. Today it is still possible to see and explore trenches, caves and artefacts from the First World War (1915-18).
The route today is well equipped with a metal rope fixed into the rock by strong metal nails that ensure the hiker’s passage and are monitored seasonally by qualified people. They vary in difficulty, length and physical effort. The easiest are called ‘sentiero ferrato’ where the hiker always walks along a rocky path protected by a metal rope on the most exposed passages. The ‘via ferrata’, on the other hand, climbs along a more or less vertical rock face where the hiker can secure himself and help himself to the metal rope.
